Call me uninformed but I thought you joined the military with a college degree, OR you did a delayed entry program while you pursued your initial four your college degree. Then if the military thought you were of value, they had a specific need, and you were willing to extend they would further your education.
The story goes that he entered the US ARMY directly after graduating from high school. That bit if information got my attention. In retrospect (sadly) he seemed ill equipped for a career in the US military. Now they will save his life just to put him front of a firing squad.....and I'd buy the bullets, or do the deed, but my guess is the line is very long to exercise those options.
