May I suggest a call to the Fire Department Headquarters (508-324-2734). They should be able to explain any city laws.

Hello, I don"t think there are any laws concerning fire pits, I've never heard of any. We usually light fires in our backyard on nice summer nights, once a neighbor called the fire dept. cause she smelled smoke, when they showed up at our house we told them we had a pit going, they checked it and left, I think if it was against the law they would of told us to put it out. They just said your neighbor called us she thought there was a fire in the neighborhood, have a good night and they left. I guess you could call the fire dept. for more information..........Rebecca

We once had to call FD because a neighbor had a fire pit going (unattended, no less). The flames were pretty high for a small pit and very close to the wooden fence and it was very windy that day, plus it was a smoky fire and filling our place with smoke. FD told them to put it out, but I don't know if it was due to conditions or to law. Bottom line is probably to be responsible if you do have one, above situation was completely irresponsible so I don't feel bad about calling FD, but probably wouldn't if they were sitting around enjoying a nice fire and watching it.
