Joseph D. Camara became City Council president at inaurugation ceremonies on Monday at B.M.C. Durfee High School's Nagle Auditorium.
Ten-year Council veteran Pat A. Casey was a unanimous choice for vice president.
Camara and Casey called their elections “a great honor,” pledging their best efforts to work with the new mayor, council and school board to improve the city.
“Fall River stands on the threshold of greatness,” Camara, 44, said.
Camara, who was elected council vice president in 2002 and edged Whitty for the presidency in 2003, urged city government to be bold and optimistic.
“Let us have the courage to do the right thing and restore the city to greatness,” said Camara, an outside sales representative for ABC Supply Co.
“I am in full support of Mayor Correia and his qualities of leadership,” Camara said of the new mayor, who also took office Monday.
“I promise to lead by example and always act in good faith,” Casey said. She advocated unity in government, saying “I always believed that Fall River works best when Fall River works together. ... As a team we cannot be stopped, and I look forward to a winning season.”
Casey, 65, is an owner-operator of Casey and Sheila’s Pet Grooming.
