I just found out that the state of Massachusetts is no longer sending out forms to remind people that their drivers license's are about to expire. They say its to save money. Did anyone hear of this being announced anywhere?
I certainly didn't. If I hadn't been told about it by a friend, I would have been driving around on an expired license as my license expired in Dec. and I never received any paperwork. Could this be a plan to make more money for the state, because if you happen to get stopped with an expired license you will be fined. Just wanted to pass this information around so people don't have to pay the fines!!!!!!!

IIRC it went into effect on 11/3/2008. It is expected to save the state a whopping $40,000. http://www.dailynewstribune.com/state/x776451871/RMV-wont-send-drivers-license-renewal-reminders-anymore
Then it says on snopes that the savings would be $800,000.

So how much will the 'savings' be is anyone's guess.

I also heard about this... since they (the RMV) doesn't want to send out mail notifications as to when our drivers licenses will expire, so then why can't they create an e-mail notification system, this way they save on the printing and mailing of the notifications and most of us that are connected to the web still receive our notices!
Unless it is really all a money making scheme for the state to increase revenue by fining us!

Something is screwy then. Me Mudder-in-Law just received a renewal form from the RMV to renew her registration for her car she received it last week and mailed it back Saturday. She is a senior but would that make a difference to the RMV??

Registrations are different from license renewals. I also received a registration renewal, thats not what they are stopping. It only pertains to license's.

 I just re-read my own post and in the first link I did post, it stated what renewals were not getting sent out. And wouldn't you know that registration renewals are not on the list although many other items are.......I'm losing it!

We're talking about politics here: anything is possible.
The "official" reason is that the government is saving money by not sending out notices when such things as drivers' licenses are due for renewal. As has been noted already, exactly how much is "saved" is anyone's guess.
I think the plan is to plan on people forgetting to renew their licenses in a timely manner, so they can slap a fine on the "offender".
It seems to me that government (on ALL levels!) is getting better and better at creating ways of getting money out of the citizen, while becoming worse and worse about being responsible about how that money gets spent.
"Fiscal responsibility": Two words that are anathema to politicians, especially when used together.

It could be look at that way Bill. And I tend to agree that many people will forget because the RMV has always been responsible for reminding us when to do our renewals but they are still sending out renewal notices for your dirvers license. They are not sending out any more notices for registration renewals. So if you do forget thay get you for an unregistered vehicle but you can still drive.....after you pay for the tow and impound and then the court costs for driving an unregistered vehicle. Let's not leave out the boost in vehicle insurance for the next five years or so that you will receive since it was a moving violation!

I hate to be the one to tell you this justsumoldguy, but you have the license renewals and registration renewals confused again. REGISTRATION RENEWALS STILL CONTINUE TO BE SENT OUT BY THE REGISTRY, LICENSE RENEWALS ARE NO LONGER BEING SENT OUT! I just wanted to set the record straight for the people who haven't heard about this. Please don't take this the wrong way, no dis-respect intended!

Your right! I got the license and registration renewal mixed up. They are vstill letting you know about you registrations running out but not your license. I still can't understand why they don't give one the option to be notified by email. That would save a bunch of money and paperwork.

O.K. you kids....you've finally gotten it straight? Registration renewal notifications ARE still being sent out, but the State is saving a bit on LICENSE renewal notifications, presuming that ALL of us know when our birthday is, and whether or not we have a one-year or three year renewal period. Period.

Wow, unnecessary roughness, flag on the play. Just a little snotty?
