Mayor Robert Correia has informed all department heads that he wants their resignations within the next 24 hours, and he has already removed one from his job.

Correia said Community Development Agency Executive Director Stephen Long has been fired and replaced on an interim basis with Robert J. Laughlin, who served as coordinator of his transition team.

“I needed to make a change in that department immediately, and I needed him to take the reins,” Correia said.

Correia informed the department heads of his plans during a meeting that began at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Department heads will be permitted to reapply for their jobs, Correia said, and if they do so will then participate in a one-on-one interview with him in the coming weeks.

Maybe it's outdated thinking....but isn't it generally accepted practice to negotiate a compensation package with new employees before they are hired? I realize these are government jobs, so money is not an issue, but it just seems that somethings missing here. Perhaps these people are willing to serve their city at minimum wage, or even for a token stipend? For this we should thank them.

I read that there were about 2 dozen people on Mayor Correia's transition team, plus his 4 longtime staffers. Was every one of these people promised a plum job with the city? It seems like the "insiders" are getting nice jobs.

Maureen C. Glisson, head of the Board of Elections commission, and director of the elections office got fired Wednesday after 5½ years. That office has been plagued by problems and screw-ups for several years, and the responsibility fell on Glisson. Many felt she was unqualified for the job when she was appointed by former Mayor Ed Lambert. They probably were correct, based on the horrible performance of that office in recent elections. The word "sloppy" was used by Mayor Lambert in relation to Glissons work.

Glisson has been replaced by 28-year-old Adam W. Chapdelaine, a lifelong city resident who worked as Sen. Joan Menard’s chief of staff for 4½ years.
Chapdelaine is being paid $53,557 for this position. Correia said he recruited Chapdelaine to take over this position from the job he held for the past six months as youth council director of the Greater New Bedford Workforce Development Board, writing and managing grants.

I have no doubt that Adam Chapdelaine will do a better job than Maureen Glisson, because it would take a serious effort to do worse. That being said, the Herald News errantly reported that Chapdelaine was Joan Menard's chief of staff for 4 1/2 years. Much like the job performance of Maureen Glisson, I find that Herald News reporting is consistently flawed; but that is another topic for another time.

According to my research, which I safely presume is more reliable than the Herald News, Chapdelaine was NOT Menard's Chief of Staff. According to his own bio on the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board he was a legislative aide to Menard and then a deputy chief of constituent services and finance. I realize it may not be a big deal but resume fluffing annoys the hell out of me, especially when it is a public official that I am paying.

Additionally, he was not listed as a paid state employee in 2006 or 2007 http://www.bostonherald.com/projects/payroll/massachusetts/2006_earnings.ASC/ so was his tenure prior to that or was it a volunteer position?

And finally, and this could go unsaid but, he, of course, donated to the correia mayoral campaign in October 2007.

Thanks Shamrock. The accuracy of your contributions are really helpful. Maybe we can get you to moderate your own forum on the site here? I don't think there can be any doubt that you know your stuff and do your homework.
